Exploring Taiwan: Day 3

On my third day in Taiwan, I feel like I've already been so used to my routine for the past few days. I feel like I have been living in the area for a quite sometime that I've been so relaxed and very much at ease in roaming around.

I've never planned so much for this day except the idea of visiting Jiufen in the afternoon. So for the rest of the day I just tried to visit the places which I've always wanted to see, such as Taipei 101 and just come-what-may on what places I can see along the way. And at night I planned to visit some famous night markets for a food trip.

The building was designed as a symbol of technology's evolution fused with Asian tradition that features many Chinese and Asian elements mixed with a postmodern style, and is designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes which is quite common in Taiwan.

Jiufen Old Street 九份

_______________________________________________

Jiufen is a decommissioned gold mining mountain town, originally built by the Japanese and now a maze of lanes and alleyways with rich history and culture, and is located at a seaside mountain area in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. It is a small village in the mountains about an hour away from Taipei.

Jiufen is located in Ruifang District of New Taipei City. The town of Ruifang is a great place to begin your adventure in scenic Northern Taiwan.

It was a weekend when I visited Jiufen, and it was really crowded. There are so many people and you cannot really move freely without hitting anyone. So it's better to visit the place on a weekday rather than a weekend.

The unique architecture of Jiufen's downtown area bears resemblance to the famous Japanese animated film Spirited Away.

Jiufen Old Street is an alleyway lined up with food stalls, tea houses souvenir shops, and some pottery stores. This alley specifically will be jam-packed with people, since it’s the main thing to do in Jiufen.

One famous attraction in the area is the richly decorated tea house, the A-Mei Teahouse. This multi-story teahouse is strategically located just a little off the main street, perched on top of a hill. From their balcony, you can admire the picturesque view in front of you, Keelung Mountain to the right and Northern shores of Taiwan on the left.

How to Get There

By MRT - From Taipei Main Station (台北車站), take the train north to Ruifang Station. After exiting the station and facing the Wellcome supermarket, take a left and walk 200 metres down Mingdeng Road. Next to the police station is a bus station (named Local Residents Plaza, 區民廣場) with routes 827 and 788 heading toward Jiufen.

Please note that the bus stop next to the police station heads east toward Jiufen, and the bus stop across from the police station heads west toward Taipei. Route 825 provides weekend service only. From here, the bus trip takes roughly 15 minutes, and the fare is NT$15. It is recommended to take bus 1062 back to Taipei and enjoy some time at Raohe Night Market (饒河夜市).

Keelung Miaokou Tourist Night Market
基隆廟口夜市

Considered to be  one of the most famous night markets in Taipei which is located about 15 minutes drive away from Jiufen, so if you’re already in the area and you love food, you definitely make a stop here. It's better to go in the late afternoon or at night time, since that is usually when the food markets in Taiwan starts to come alive.

Many tourists prefer to visit Keelung at the end of a day touring Taiwan's North Coast and places like Jiufen. A visit to Miaokou Night Market for dinner is the perfect ending to a long day, and transportation back to Taipei City is convenient and fast.

How to Get There

By Bus & Train - Take the Bus 1062 from Jiufen going to Ruifang Station, then take  the Train fom Ruifang Station going to Badu Station (13min), then from Badu Station to Sankeng Station (3min), then you can walk around 1.1km for about 12 min to Miaokou Night Market (https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Jiufen-Station/Miaokou-Night-Market)

Raohe Street Night Market 饒河夜市

One of the oldest night markets in Taipei, the Raohe Street Night Market is a must visit destination in Taipei. Considered to be the epitome of a traditional Taiwanese night market, this 600 meter path along Raohe Street in Songshan District is packed with fun and interesting food selection, quaint shops and stalls, as well as carnival games with prizes.

Raohe Night Market is being located next to another Taipei institution — the stunning Ciyou Temple.

It's already late at night that I got to the night market, so I was not able to see try lots of food and was not able to see lots of attraction because most stalls have closed already.

How to Get There

By MRT - Take the Green Line 3 to the terminal station Songshan (松山), exit 5. The night market entrance is just to the right across the street next to the temple.

It was really a tiring day but i am still very happy and grateful that I was able to explore and go to the places that I've always wanted to visit. Yet, I feel like there's so much more left to explore in this city.
