A night of Fashion, Art, Design and Glam! The Davao Fashion & Design Council (DFDC) presents its first ever Stellar: Rising Fashion Star competition that took place at Abreeza Ayala Malls last August 26, 2016.
Mindanao’s up-and-coming fashion designers were given the chance to put their vision and skills to the test through a competition that encouraged these young talents to rethink, create, and innovate a visionary and contemporary take on Mindanao’s cultural and artisanal heritage.
Stellar: Rising Fashion Star is a Mindanao-wide fashion and design competition combining design ideation and business incubation wherein the Philippine Women’s College of Davao serves as academe partner to Stellar, its Information Technology, Business Administration, and Fine Arts programs joining forces to train eventual winners for the design ideation and business incubation education.
On its first year, Stellar’s maiden edition takes on the theme “I AMindanao” It challenges the competing Mindanaoan designers to interpret the island, its people, and its culture through a three (3) piece capsule collection with a global perspective that tweaks Mindanao artisanal heritage to create wearable and marketable garments using manipulated, commercially available materials or traditional and indigenous textiles.
The Stellar’s competing designers are Aries Buenvenida, Neil Patrick Jimlani, Wilson Limon, Jr., Lala Luz Chua, and Mandy Velasco from Davao City; Chard Pulatche from Davao del Norte; Mimi Tandingan from Davao Occidental; Frankie Galagnara from Cagayan de Oro City; Marlon Suan from Tagum City; and Mark Joseph Sayad from the Island Garden City of Samal.
It is really an interesting group of talented young designers that really exudes passion and dedication to their craft. A competition will not be complete without the panel of judges. The people to judge the creativity and originality of the contestants collections are: The Style and Design Academy's CEO, Ms. CATHY BINAG. The Creative Director to One Mega Group and MEGA, the Philippines' best fashion magazine, SUKI SALVADOR; The most current and important powerhouse Couture Designer, CARY SANTIAGO, and Asia's Most Influential Designer by Mercedes Benz Stylo Asia Fashion Week, AVEL BACUDIO - people that really made an impact in the society through fashion and art.
For their final presentation, each designer showcased their collection that depicts the theme "I AMindanao".

The three designers who shine the brightest in Stellar received cash prizes as well as business incubation mentorship from DFDC. The grand prize winner gets Php 50,000; the first runner-up gets Php 30,000; and the second runner-up receives Php 20,000; with all three set to receive additional prizes.
